What is ESOS?
The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment scheme, introduced by the UK government to make sure large enterprises in the UK are energy efficient. Under the scheme, large organisations are required to assess their energy usage every 4 years and to find new ways to save energy.
Which organisations need to comply?
Organisations are required to comply with ESOS if they meet the following criteria:
250 or more employees or;
an annual turnover in excess of £44 million, and
an annual balance sheet total in excess of £38 million.
Is an overseas company with a UK registered establishment which has 250 or more UK employees (paying income tax in the UK)

The 5 Steps to ESOS Compliance
Step 1: Calculate your total energy consumption.
During the first step, we will measure and document your organisations scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. For more information about scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, read our easy guide here.
Step 2: Identify energy efficient measures and energy management opportunities.
During the process, energy-saving measures will be highlighted for your business to consider. By reducing your energy usage, your organisation will cut your energy bills and gain financial stability over your energy consumption.
Step 3: Our expert Lead Assessor will carry out and review your ESOS audit.
Our registered Lead Assessor will review and complete the crucial audit that your organisations needs to comply with ESOS.
Step 4: Submit your ESOS report to the Environment Agency.
Once submitted to the Environment Agency, your compliance will be recorded. From there, it's up to your business what you do with your ESOS report, however, we strongly recommend that your organisation takes them into a careful review.
Step 5: Ensure that you comply with ESOS every 4 years.
Organisations that qualify for ESOS must carry out ESOS assessments every 4 years. However, don’t worry. We will keep in touch with you to ensure you are compliant for all future ESOS phases.

No, you do not need both. An registered ISO50001 certification will demonstrate your company's commitment to their environmental responsibility, making you exempt from the mandatory ESOS compliance.

No, your compliance will be registered with the Environment Agency but your assessment if for your company's reference only.

You risk being fined if your company fails to comply with ESOS. An initial penalty up to £5,000, plus a daily penalty of up to £500 for each working day until the company complies. However, larger business could face fines of up to £50,000.
In 2019, over 6 month period, the Environment Agency issued £86,550 in fines.
